BMW Transmission and Drivetrain Repair
There are a lot of components included when one mentions BMW transmission and drivetrain repair. This includes automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, front differentials, rear differentials, the driveshaft, and in some vehicles the transfer case as well as CV joints or axles. We perform a number of services and repairs on all of the aforementioned components but we do not perform ALL repairs on transmissions. Internal repair of clutches on automatic transmissions is left to a transmission shop that solely specializes in such a repair.
Although there are still many components that we are able to repair and replace before requiring a transmission shop. Such components include solenoids, transmission control modules, as well as internal harnesses with integrated temperature sensors that often have issues. In reality not many of our customers require a transmission shop. Although BMW states that transmission fluid is “Lifetime” that means lifetime of the vehicle, which according to the manufacturer is about 10 years/100,000 miles. Many of us plan to use our cars much longer than that. In this case we recommend transmission fluid service including a fluid change as well as filter replacement.
You wouldn’t believe how many calls we get about the price of replacing a transmission in a BMW and we speak with the customer and ask them if they have attempted to change their fluid first. Often times the dealer doesn’t recommend that at all since they want to sell you a product which will guarantee a fix. Although this may be courteous of them we allow our customers the option. Depending on the specific issue often times a transmission fluid change can resolve many different problems in a transmission thus not requiring replacing the transmission. In our eyes the risk vs. reward makes it a worthwhile investment to attempt to fix a transmission for a few hundred vs. several thousands. This same concept can be applied to differentials.
In one case our customer brought in their car for a differential replacement since we were more competitively priced than the dealer. We offered a fluid change before replacement to hopefully alleviate the issues, and two years later, the customer still has not needed a differential replacement. This is why we try to educate our customers on BMW transmission and drivetrain repair.
Make sure when you have a transfer case fluid service or differential fluid replaced that you are only using BMW specific fluids and not an aftermarket equivalent. We have seen issues with such fluids, although it’s nice to save some money on the fluid the savings does not outweigh the risk you are taking of the part functioning improperly after replacement. We also perform bearing replacements as well as BMW manual transmission repair, this includes clutch and flywheel replacement in many stick shift BMW’s.
We are capable of replacing and programming the EGS (automatic transmission control unit) we are even capable of reprogramming certain used modules, but this is done on a case by case basis.
Really Great service here. I was in a time crunch and the guy (young tall male) expedited the process for me. Seemed like a family run business, everyone very friendly and accomodating. I would certainly go back, and am referring my roommates and friends go there when they need to as well!
I have been using San Diego Bimmer MB since 1994. They are reasonable and honest and the mechanics are knowledgeable. Andy, Eva and Conrad are a pleasure to work with and go out of their way to accomodate my needs. i highly recommend their business. Molly McConnell
Took my Nissan Altima in because it had a small, but growing, oil leak. They fixed it rather quickly and for much cheaper than a quote I received from another shop. I would recommend them to anyone. Infact, once the manufacturer's warranty is over on my other car, I will probably start taking it here!
They are great!!! I take my Mercedes only to them now. Real parts, great honest people, don't be fooled by the building they know what they are doing and at half the cost or more than the dealer!!!!!!!!
a small dinky lot with excellent customer service and great work on very technical, module related work on recent Audis. A great experience after a number of major let downs from the only Audi dealership on a very shiny lot within 20 miles.
I have been going to Adams Avenue Imports for years and highly recommend them. First I was taking my Toyota Camry and more recently my Audi A4. They have always fixed whatever problem I've had for a fair price in a reasonable amount of time. They are a pleasure to deal with - honest, reliable and even kind.... Recently I had an estimate for work from the dealer, and Adams Ave. Imports did the same work for a much lower rate. They are good people who do good work.
